Individual Medical Insurance Overview

What is the cost of individual medical health insurance?

There are several things that will be taken into account when determining your premiums.  Such as: age, zip code, lifestyle habits and health status.  For example, a person that smokes will most likely pay a higher premium than a non-smoker. Same with a person that is overweight or has pre-existing health conditions. This is the case because the individual will be looked at as someone that is at high risk.  If you are covered under family medical insurance policy,  they will not single you out for an increase based on claims made in the past. If the rate is increased, they will increase the rate for all the members who are covered under the same family health insurance plan.  Also, the insurance company will not cancel your policy for having several claims.  But, if you have a HMO plan, you are given a maximum annual and lifetime benefit, and if you go over the maximum as described in your policy they can legally terminate your policy and you will then need to find another provider that will take you on.

What is the difference between family medical insurance & individual medical insurance?

They both tend to be referred to as private health insurance or personal health insurance. However most commonly, they are called individual health insurance. It may sound confusing, or misleading, but even though your spouse and children are or would be included onto your plan it is still referred to as individual health plan. There is also family medical insurance for those who are unemployed, self-employed or a student.  And if you have a newborn child you can easily add them to your plan. But know that once an individual turns 65 years old they must drop their individual medical insurance policy and join Medicare as well as medicare supplemental insurance.
